Slatonite Vietnam Veteran Roger Rockafellow was interviewed by Channel 11 and is overwhelmed with tears of happiness and sorrow.
Our 2018 Honor Flight was the FIRST AND ONLY Honor Flight to be THE FAMILY at the Quantico National Cemetery for MSGT. Carl Buskell who also is a Vietnam Veteran.
His interview is listed next.

 

 

 

 

 

The folded flag is presented to HONOR FLIGHT 2018 and then the 21 gun salute for a veteran.

The origin of the 21 gun salute: In earlier times when a ship wanted to enter a harbor they would fire (out of harms way) 7 cannons, the harbor would answer with their 7 cannons (out of harms way also) (harbor could also fire 3 times faster than the ship), the ship would again fire 7 rounds that they received the message.

7 rounds X 3 times = 21 gun salute. Most now use 3 rifles fired 3 times.

 

 

The playing of the taps was started during the civil war with a signal to end the day , lights out.

During a funeral the Commander of the Union Army thought it best to NOT have a 21 gun salute because the opposing army might consider a call to battle.

So the Bugle played the 24 note tune for fallen soldier burial.
